Uncovering Growth Opportunities for a Swiss Luxury Watch Brand in India

Victorinox Case Study

Business Problem

An iconic Swiss watchmaker faced a perplexing challenge in India’s premium watch market. While one of their top competitors dominated unaided brand recall and maintained consistent presence, our client’s minimal awareness seemed to suggest underperformance.

Yet their purchase funnel told a different story. Once considered, the brand converted at higher rates against rivaling category leaders. So, the brand wanted to know if this revenue gap is due to an awareness crisis or incorrect decisions in market positioning.

What & How We Did It

  • We used Borderless Access’ proprietary brand diagnostics framework, Brand Kompass™ to evaluate the brand’s market position and competitive standing.
  • Measured the complete customer journey from brand awareness to purchase conversion.
  • Analyzed brand perception across 18 key attributes to identify strengths and improvement areas.
  • Segmented buyers by attitudes and behaviors to uncover distinct consumer personas and purchase drivers.
  • Surveyed 509 premium watch buyers (₹60K+ purchase value) across top metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Kolkata using both online and face-to-face interviews.

Key Insights

  • Strong conversion, low awareness: The brand converts buyers as effectively as category leaders once considered, but low top-of-mind awareness limits growth.
  • Strengthen the performance story: The brand is valued for its heritage and design but needs stronger communication around technology, durability, and functional performance.
  • Digital and peer influence drive decisions: Friends, family, and YouTube are the biggest purchase influencers, highlighting the need for a stronger creator-led and digital content strategy.
  • Growth lies in an omnichannel approach: Cross-channel shopping is the norm, with opportunities to expand beyond key retail partners and accelerate growth in metro cities and younger consumer segments.

Client Impact :

Brand Kompass™ identified where growth opportunities actually exist by giving a data-driven roadmap to prioritizing the right audiences, messaging, markets, and channels for maximum business impact.

By focusing on high-intent consumer segments, strengthening its performance narrative, and investing in the channels that truly influence purchase decisions, the brand now has the potential to drive a 25% lift in awareness, increase penetration within key growth segments by 40%, and achieve 15% volume growth over the next 12–18 months.
