According to the\u00a0National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), 7 million direct employees of the restaurant industry have been hit by the pandemic and the industry body had approached the government of India for a bailout package to help sustain them through the worst phase of the pandemic. The situation is similar in other parts of the world, as people\u2019s habits regarding eating out has changed since the pandemic.To explore the impact of the pandemic on the restaurant industry further,\u00a0Borderless Access\u00a0recently conducted an<a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> online market research <\/a>study among owners of restaurants and eateries in several countries around the world. In India, Indonesia, and Vietnam, respondents that agree with the statement were 52%, 49%, and 49%, respectively. However, a relatively small percentage of respondents said they had to shut shop, especially in Indonesia where 5% said they had to shut down.<\/p><\/br>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"875\" height=\"554\" src=\"https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/eating-out-culture-due-to-covid.webp\" alt=\"Effect on Eating Out Culture in Pandemic\" class=\"wp-image-2691\" srcset=\"https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/eating-out-culture-due-to-covid.webp 875w, https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/eating-out-culture-due-to-covid-300x190.webp 300w, https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/eating-out-culture-due-to-covid-768x486.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 875px) 100vw, 875px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>On a positive note, the majority of restaurant owners said that most of their patrons are keen on eating out again, with some customers understandably being cautious about eating out. A fair percentage of respondents said they managed to tide over the pandemic by adapting to the situation (India \u2013 28%, Indonesia \u2013 52%, and Vietnam \u2013 43%).<\/p><\/br>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"875\" height=\"554\" src=\"https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/impact-of-pandemic-on-ordering-in-culture.webp\" alt=\"Impact of Pandemic on Ordering in Culture\" class=\"wp-image-2695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/impact-of-pandemic-on-ordering-in-culture.webp 875w, https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/impact-of-pandemic-on-ordering-in-culture-300x190.webp 300w, https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/impact-of-pandemic-on-ordering-in-culture-768x486.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 875px) 100vw, 875px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the majority of respondents, particularly in Indonesia and Vietnam (53% and 50%, respectively), said more people are ordering food online compared to before the pandemic. In Indonesia, an exceptional 81% said they have now allowed customers to order food online and 70% have partnered with delivery companies. It\u2019s a similar story in Vietnam, where 59% and 58% of the respondents said they now let customers order in and have partnered with delivery companies, respectively.<\/p><\/br>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"964\" src=\"https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/adapting-to-the-pandemic-situation-1024x964.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/adapting-to-the-pandemic-situation-1024x964.webp 1024w, https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/adapting-to-the-pandemic-situation-300x282.webp 300w, https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/adapting-to-the-pandemic-situation-768x723.webp 768w, https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/adapting-to-the-pandemic-situation.webp 1041w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding making customers feel more comfortable to step into a restaurant or to order their food online, the majority of respondents in all three countries said they have implemented social distancing rules as well as made wearing masks mandatory. This includes increasing the marketing budget (53% in India, 47% in Indonesia and 46% in Vietnam) as well as trying out various marketing methods, some more than others.<\/p><\/br>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"944\" height=\"554\" src=\"https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/marketing-spend-since-pandemic.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2706\" srcset=\"https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/marketing-spend-since-pandemic.webp 944w, https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/marketing-spend-since-pandemic-300x176.webp 300w, https:\/\/borderlessaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/marketing-spend-since-pandemic-768x451.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 944px) 100vw, 944px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>58% of Indian restaurant owners said they leaned more heavily towards digital marketing methods than before the pandemic and 49% said they marketed on delivery partners\u2019 platforms more than usual. The same holds true in Indonesia as well, but to a higher degree with 70% adopting digital marketing and 54% relying on delivery platforms for advertising. Online booking systems and food ordering apps have been particularly useful in all three countries.
